My family and I recently spent four wonderfully relaxing (but very hot) days at La Quinta Resort & Spa in La Quinta. Nestled at the foot of an exquisitely beautiful mountain base, this huge property boasts more than 40 pools. The property is laid out on a grid, with the buildings forming courtyards between them. Each building has eight rooms. The four on the bottom open up to one of the many pools, and the rooms on the top floors with the Starlight Casitas have enclosed and lockable private patios. Which was great for us because my daughter could ride her scooter on our patio while we lounged inside to escape the afternoon heat!
The rooms have been recently upgraded. Which simply means a fresh coat of paint, new carpet and furnishings. Don’t expect a complete overhaul. This property has been around since the 20’s and the original bungalows have been Summer retreats for some of the biggest names in Hollywood since its inception. As more buildings have been added to the property over the years, the rooms get increasingly more modern, but the only new part of the hotel are the Spa Villas.
Make sure you bring your kids scooters and helmets. Once you park your car near your room there is no need to leave the property again. With endless pools, tons of walking paths and sidewalks, an onsite putting green, shops, a fitness facility, a gorgeous spa and 3 restaurants what more could you need? Want to play a full 18 holes? The golf course is just minutes away. Our daughter has recently taken-up golf and her main request for our Summer vacation was to go somewhere she could swim and play golf. Done and done.
We played the Mountain Course, beautifully designed by Pete Dye and situated in a naturally breathtaking location, just at the foot of the mountains. Kids aren’t allowed to play until after 3pm, so it was definitely crazy hot (we were there in June) but we made it through 7 holes before the begging for ice cream took its toll. She loved playing!
In the mornings we swam in one of the many pools. The Main Pool is where all the families congregated. They have a bar where you can order food, a wading pool for little kids and lots of cabanas. We preferred staying in one of the smaller pools near our room. Since it was the off season it felt like we had our own private pool to ourselves. There’s also a golf cart that drives past all the pools and lovely staff members who take food orders and bring you drinks at the smaller pools.
For breakfast we wandered over to Twenty6 where I discovered a banana date bread that was so divine we had to go back every morning for more! (The chef promised to send me the recipe. If I get it, I will add it to this post!) All three of the restaurants are located near the lobby. Twenty6 is more casual and features American fare. It is a great place to watch a game and have a beer and bar food in the afternoons. Upstairs is Adobe, their Mexican restaurant. The table side guacamole is delicious and I am definitely going back for their enchiladas. On the evenings in the weekends there is a band playing outside Adobe on the patio – which is more like a terraced garden seating area with little cozy spots to sit and enjoy the night.
Our favorite restaurant, however, was Morgan’s in the Desert by three-time James Beard award-winning chef and pioneer of the farm-to-table movement, Jimmy Schmidt. The porcini crusted all natural filet was sumptuous! The setting is elegant Southwest, with high ceilings, large chairs that envelope you, warm fires and a soft glow that reminds me of a hacienda I once visited in Santa Fe.
The most beautiful part of the property are the Spa Villas. These are the condominiums that they’ve developed near the spa. The pools and the landscaping in this area are so lovely and lush. If it wasn’t for the heat I would’ve thought wee were in the South of France. If you are a swimmer, this is where you will find the lap pool. Even if you aren’t a swimmer…stop by and take a dip. Its beautiful!
If you are a tennis fanatic this resort is for you! Boasting multiple courts, a Pro Court and a long list of celebrity tennis coaches the tennis offerings at La Quinta are beyond impressive.
